“Airnergy” turns wifi signal into power

Posted by Graham on Tuesday, 16 February, 2010

Empty Tech’ers keen on recycling the energy around us might want to take a look at RSA’s new product, called “Airnergy”, which turns the wi-fi waves you’re swimming in into power to recharge your devices.

I wonder if one day we’ll be able to reduce our dependency on the mains, and charge small devices (or large ones?) off an array of this kind of thinking – from energy produced by walking on floors to roadside turbines.

Distributed power capture. Recycle everything.

Exoskeletons from Japan

I’ve recently returned from Japan with a bounty of inspirations and ideas that I want to integrate with the idea of Empty Technology. This will take time though, so here’s something else from Japan instead – video from NECN via the Register of a street trial of assisted walking:

I haven’t been able to listen to the sound yet, but suspect the inventor’s beliefs are more important. Professor Sankai works for the Cybernics department at the University of Tsukuba, and it’s great to see that the idea of being healthy and happy – rather than dominant and controlling – is what drives his love of technology:

Rehabilitation, ADL, and caring support will be the application in medical and personal care fields. The workers working under harsh conditions could also use ‘HAL’ to support their work.

Perhaps the words closing his statements are good ones to remember as Empty Technology develops further…

I will develop technologies that make people smile.
